Meet the Third District

Mono County’s Third Supervisorial District extends from the top of Conway Summit south to the top of Mammoth Mountain.

Mono County’s Third Supervisorial District extends from the top of Conway Summit south to the top of Mammoth Mountain. Over 2500 folks call the Third District home in the communities of Conway Ranch, Mono City, Highway 167/Cottonwood Canyon, Lundy Canyon, Lee Vining, June Lake and within the Town of Mammoth Lakes from Sierra Star Golf Course to north of Lake Mary Road. Click here to see a detailed map on the County website. Each community is unique, self-defined and deeply intertwined. Covering two watersheds - Mono Basin and the Owens River - the Third District is bound together by schools, youth sports, commerce, healthcare services, and available housing.

The Third District lies at the heart of the homeland of the Kootzaduka’a people. Securing federal recognition and a land base for the Kootzaduka’a is long overdue. It is beyond time to secure the recognition they deserve and help ensure tribal members can return home.

With elevations spanning from 13,061’ atop Mt. Dana down to 6,378’ at the Lee Vining Creek delta, the Third District melds sagebrush plains, shifting dunes, volcanic mountain ranges, glacial valleys, and rich conifer forests into one of the most visited outdoor destinations in America. These public lands support an economy largely driven by outdoor recreation. Working to sustain balance between tourism and quality of life for those of us who live and work here is perhaps our biggest challenge and greatest opportunity.

The health of our tourism-based economy is directly tied to the health of those who live here. A vibrant economy depends on a resilient community. This community includes our homes, our businesses, our schools, as well as our forests, lakes, creeks and campgrounds. Without a thriving community of local people, we don’t have someone to take food orders, turn down the sheets, plow streets, clear trails or teach our kids. Ensuring a diverse and engaged community is able to make this place home is the only way we’ll continue to have people who answer the call of the fire alarm, volunteer to lead our civic organizations, coach our kids’ sports and do the million things it takes to keep our home healthy and vibrant.

There is so much wonder and opportunity across the Third District. Thank you to all of you who make this place home. I look forward to working with each of you to build ever deeper engagement in this place for years to come.
